Codecs: H264 vs H265

H264 and H265 are types of codecs. Codecs are names for processes that compress and decompress large file types like video. Because we record high quality, 180 degree stereoscopic video, our videos contain a lot of visual detail and information. They have to be compressed so that you can download a normal file size. Depending on the process we use, we call it an H264 or H265 file.

For some file types, mainly 4K versions, a H264 download option is available. The switch to H265 occurred a couple of years ago due to its higher compression efficiency.

H265 offers:

• Smaller file sizes
• Less chance of buffering during streaming
• Faster download speeds
• More storage space freed up compared to H264 files

Incredible, right? Initially, H265 wasn't compatible with all devices, resulting in a mix of H264 and H265 encodes being offered. Over time, devices became more compatible with H265, allowing us to make the switch.

H264 codec is still offered in 4K due to its status as an industry standard and user preference. We see no visual difference in quality between the different codecs.
